Governor Kaine discusses his Renew Virginia Initiative
Virginia Beach, VA - January 13, 2009 - Governor Kaine visited Solar Services
Inc., the Solar Headquarters of Virginia , Monday to announce legislation to
promote renewable energy incentives and tour their state of the art solar
warehouse and training facility.
According to Kaine, this will help create new jobs, reduce our reliance
on foreign oil, and improve our environment.
Solar Services, distributes for manufacturers such as
Aquatherm Industries, Alternate Energy Technologies, Sunpower, Heliotrope,
Kyocera, Sunearth, and Sunda - all of whom are playing their part to help
increase the use of alternate forms of energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
Legislative Proposals include:
Renewable Energy System Income Tax Credits
This bill establishes renewable energy system income tax
credits. It will be an income tax credit
for individuals and companies installing alternate energy systems. The credits vary based on size of system
installed. Individuals can receive up to
$8,000 for solar photovoltaic, $4,000 for solar thermal, and $6,000 for
wind-power. This takes that first
important step in towards building a long-term marketplace for renewable energy
in Virginia.
Renewable Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption
This bill relieves companies of the sales tax of solar
photovoltaic, and thermal systems. This
will not only provide savings to the companies, but should help make these
solar and thermal systems more affordable for the consumer.
Clean Energy Manufacturing Incentive
This bill will expand existing incentive grants available to
solar photovoltaic manufacturers to include manufacturing of other low and
no-carbon energy sources. These grants
are available to new and expanding businesses.
The grant size is based on the economic return to the Commonwealth from
the new business activity.
